Why I am not watching a second of the Ber--, er...Beijing Winter Games.

If, for some reason, the genocide of the Uyghurs is not enough reason to say no, there's this grotesque spectacle of the Chinese Reich ending the broadcast of Dutch journalists.

The only way American-based transnationals like Comcast (owner of NBC) will learn is if you kick them in the pocketbook.

I mean, say what you will about the Berlin Games in '36, but at least Kristallnacht hadn't happened by then. The Nazis even temporarily took down the "Jews Not Welcome" signs

  1. I normally pay no attention to the Olympics, so saying I will not watch them would be meaningless. But if I did follow the Olympics, I would not spend one second watch these.

And don't get me started on the upcoming World Cup.

    1. Yeah, the 2022 Cup is a real loser, too. A shame, as the drama can be something else.

  2. Agree completely. In fact, I didn’t watch a second of any of the 2020 version, either. No fans and athletes running around in useless masks. Phooey. The real Olympic spirit died decades ago. It’s only become more obvious in the past 20 years or so.

  3. I took to curling back in the 2006 Games and really enjoyed it. And there are plenty of events that I will normally at least check in on, where the spirit of the Games still live.

But I cannot follow these. Even by the IOC's lax moral corruption standards, this is unspeakably foul.

  4. It's sad. Before the days of patriotic hype, many events were great watching, especially downhill skiing. I remember getting the measles my senior year in high school and my 2 weeks at home coincided with the Innsbruck games. While my siblings were in school, I was allowed to come down to the couch and watch tv. Franz Klammer, a name I still remember.

IOC, NCAA, NFL--too many corrupt braintrusts ruining real sport these days. Enjoyed a handful of FA Cup games this past weekend.

Be reasonably civil. Ire alloyed with reason is fine. But slagging the host gets you the banhammer.
