Remember the response to the OPM hack in 2015?

The tyrants of China sure do.

Because there wasn't much of one.

Which is why they keep hacking away.

Yeah, it's good that we're swatting Russia with a little--emphasis deliberate--more vigor now.

But apparently there's too much money to be made in China to do anything meaningful about their behavior.

Right, Jeffrey Sachs, treasured adviser to Rome?

  1. I'll be honest I had forgotten that one.

But then hacking attacks only became a thing within my lifetime. I think we're still trying to figure out what to do about it as I know there is some debate over whether lives are worth risking over 1s and 0s.

(Personally I kind of liked Jonah Goldberg's idea of "letters of marquee" for American hackers. If we're in uncharted waters, let's bring back privateers.)

  2. I think when we heard about responses 2017-21, it was for PR. Just a reminder the administration was on the warpath or whatever. Dems these days strike me as a little more intelligent, and perhaps nuanced in terms of handling foreign threats in the public sphere.

I see two possibilities afoot. One, the new and pre-Trump administrations were totally incompetent at cyber-security and/or in the PR department where US newsreaders are concerned. Two, stuff is happening and we're not in the need-to-know category. As long as people can still surf amazon, or parler, or netflix, or zoom, maybe they're happy and they don't care about Russians, Chinese they can't see.

  3. Yes, the Third Obama Term people who let the Chinese off scot-free for stealing my and my brother's info and who were backed to the hilt by the same Wall Street titans panting to return to business as usual with China are going to be competent this time.

Yes, of course: Botox Man (D) Good.

Be reasonably civil. Ire alloyed with reason is fine. But slagging the host gets you the banhammer.
