Trump is speaking later today.

He could do a lot to calm things by speaking against calls for armed protests.

That would be Presidential--especially after not speaking to his Veep until late yesterday.

It would be a better approach than offering Bill Belichick a Medal of Freedom.

Not sure how much money I would bet on it, coins being in short supply these days.

--He says with profound worry about the future.

  1. I wouldn't take seriously anything reported in the media about what Trump or Pence did do or did not do in private settings. (I'm at the point where my default assumption is that the reporters make it up. They've admitted that one of their 'senior officials' was the PA of the Secy. of Homeland Security).

I think Ronald Reagan met privately with George Bush the Elder about once a week. He may have had phone contacts or group meetings in between. Those two were fairly friendly. Richard Nixon, per Alexander Haig, 'isolated Spiro Agnew like a bacillus'. I don't think it's all that unusual for Presidents and Vice Presidents to go for some days without meeting or speaking. Trump and Pence have zero in common, so any dealings between them are likely to be office-cordial at best.

I don't think it much matters what Trump says, they'll manufacture spin out of any sentence fragment they can locate (or they just will not quote anything and use false paraphrases). Integrity is always in short supply. We live in a time where it has nearly disappeared among people in public life.

    1. In standard working situations, chatting up the Vice-President once a week makes sense.

But a mob barging in with some of them who had said "hang him" is not a standard work week.

  2. He could apologize and resign. That would be good.

    1. He has nothing for which to apologize and resigning serves only two puposes

  3. It's a weird moment when I'm in agreement with Todd over Art on anything. But here we are.

  4. My sense of the volatility of the moment is that it's 50-50 a resignation would make the mob worse.

Then again, my natural pessimistic inclinations are in full control right now.

While we're at it, look who wants to work at PBS, and gets past their hiring screens.

    1. There is no doubt there are lots of people who have big plans for us. The awful woman who won the Pulitzer just said the same thing without the necessity of hidden recorders.
