Dr. Fauci's Truth Problem.

The problem with paternalistic lying is that it's still lying.

First, he lied about masks, saying they were not effective, in order to keep ordinary yokels from making a run on the supplies.

And now, he's been called out for moving goalposts on the level of vaccination necessary to achieve herd immunity.

There is another problem with lying--it makes the listener wonder what else you might not be telling the truth about.

And speaking of not being forthcoming: has anyone followed up on the bombshell story revealing the NIH's funding of "gain of function" research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology?

But just last year, the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the organization led by Dr. Fauci, funded scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and other institutions for work on gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses.

In 2019, with the backing of NIAID, the National Institutes of Health committed $3.7 million over six years for research that included some gain-of-function work. The program followed another $3.7 million, 5-year project for collecting and studying bat coronaviruses, which ended in 2019, bringing the total to $7.4 million.

Many scientists have criticized gain of function research, which involves manipulating viruses in the lab to explore their potential for infecting humans, because it creates a risk of starting a pandemic from accidental release.

SARS-CoV-2 , the virus now causing a global pandemic, is believed to have originated in bats. U.S. intelligence, after originally asserting that the coronavirus had occurred naturally, conceded last month that the pandemic may have originated in a leak from the Wuhan lab. Dr. Fauci did not respond to Newsweek's requests for comment.

And please note that there's a difference between "creating" and "manipulating," which is something to keep in mind when reading the "rebuttal" statements which have not actually responded to this story.

  1. Not sure about this. Did the man lie, or was he mistaken/yet to be informed on the research? As I recall, masks weren't really a thing until weeks into the pandemic. I think your long quote is a dead issue. But I'm sure there's some Trump supporter nodding in approval in the c-space, so there's that.

  2. My friend Dale makes it about the person, not the argument or issue. Your objection is overruled, sir. You need to show, nearly to the point of proof, that the man knew one thing and deliberately communicated something contrary. Lacking that, you are shackled to CCC 2478 as a modus operandi.

  3. You have never responsed to a full argument or accepted any evidence I have provided you on anything where we disagreed, Todd.

Thus, I must I decline youratest invitation to your argument clinic gainsaying and goalpost moving exercise. May the rest of your Christmas season be blessed.

    1. Understood. But I have seen no evidence that Dr Fauci has lied. I think skeptics doubt him. That is a valid feeling and/or opinion. It may have the whiff of truth or ignorance to it.

I respect your education as a legal mind. But my experience with science has taught me that research is an entirely different thing, and Dr Fauci, as a man of science, would be the first to concede he and others didn't know everything from the start. Brother to brother, I can challenge you as a fellow Catholic to be more moral in your writing. That's all from the gadfly today. Blessings on the 7th Day

    2. fauci has a LONG career of lying staring in the 1980s with HIV epidemic. He killed a lot of people back then, on purpose, lying to the public about the transmission of that virus, if it is even the cause of of AIDS, to cover up it was in the blood supply. There were BOOKS written on this. Fauci is a career criminal who was put into his position to do the bidding of big pharma. He somehow conned Reagan into signing the 1986 vaccine injury act to shield all vaccine manufacturers from liability from death or harm vaccines cause, and they cause many. He and his buddies at the CDC were instrumental in the coverup of vaccines cause autism..again,whistleblower came forward with evidence and congress looked the other way. Fauci is a sociopath. He lies and they way you can tell that is if you actually know anything about viruses, farrs law of epidemiology, previous pandemics and how every virus ever to cause a pandemic or epidemic dissipated on its own years prior to vaccines. He has conflicts of interest with pharma, and makes a lot of money off of pushing their craptastic vaccines. To say you havent seen any evidence of Fauci lying is like saying you've never seen any evidence that Pharmaceutical companies have lied and killed people with their drugs. That would be false. They are criminal organizations that pay billions out in settlements and lawsuits all the time. Ever heard of Vioxx? Fauci is a creep. You should watch every video clip of him you can find. He says different things on different news outlets, whatever flavor he feels like laying on the american people at that time. he likes to hear himself talk. He's also know in his industry as someone who "suicides" others...bullies them until they mysteriously kill themselves. So please, spare us your defense of this monster. It's disgusting.

    3. Dale's first link sunk his premise. Masks weren't a thing until May, and for a scientist to admit the progress of understanding on a disease is less about lying and more about how real science works. When an opinion starts out with a big whiff, I hold little hope for the rest. Likewise the anonymous commenter about the much-disproved connection between autism and vaccines. Fake news deserves its label. Time to move on; nothing logical here folks.

  4. It's my blog. Move as you like--or not.

And also recall that Dr. Fauci admitted his March recommendation was motivated at least in part by PPE supply concerns. So apparently there was some level of protection provided by masking in March--as confirmed by his acknowledgment of South Korea and Taiwan's successful measures at the time. The noble lie, whose pattern was repeated by the herd immunity calculation change.

Throw in Orange Man Bad, and voila.
